Nepal Opens Solo Trekking in Restricted Areas – 2026 Update

Nepal has taken a major step in adventure tourism by officially allowing solo foreign trekkers to access restricted trekking areas under the revised 2026 policy announced by the Department of Immigration (DOI) on March 23, 2026. This is a significant change from previous rules, which required a minimum of two trekkers to enter these sensitive regions. Now, independent travelers can explore some of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan destinations, supported by structured safety measures and licensed guides.

What Changed in Trekking Permit Rules?

Until now, restricted area permits (RAPs) were only available to groups, preventing solo adventurers from trekking in regions near the Nepal–China border. The updated 2026 rules bring several key changes:

  • Solo foreign trekkers can now apply for permits in restricted areas.
  • Permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency.
  • A licensed trekking guide is mandatory for all solo trekkers.
  • The agency is responsible for logistics, safety, and emergency support.
  • One licensed guide can accompany up to seven trekkers.

These changes ensure solo trekking remains safe while maintaining controlled tourism in remote areas.

Restricted Areas Now Open to Solo Trekkers

The new policy applies to 15 restricted zones across 13 districts, mostly along the Nepal–China border. Solo trekkers can now access some of Nepal’s most exclusive and culturally rich trekking routes:

Upper Mustang Trek – Known as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” this trek offers Lo Manthang, desert landscapes, and ancient Tibetan monasteries.

Upper Dolpa & Lower Dolpa Trek – One of Nepal’s most remote trekking regions, featuring Shey Phoksundo Lake, traditional Bon culture, and untouched trails.

Manaslu Circuit & Tsum Valley Trek – A quieter alternative to Everest and Annapurna, with views of Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), Gurung villages, hidden valleys, and unique Himalayan culture.

Nar Phu Valley Trek – Remote valleys with strong Tibetan influence, dramatic landscapes, and authentic mountain life.

These areas offer less crowded, high-altitude trekking experiences for serious adventurers who want to combine nature, culture, and solitude.

Digital Permit System

Nepal’s Department of Immigration has introduced a fully digital trekking permit system, making the process faster and more efficient:

  • Travelers in Nepal can apply using a valid visa number.
  • Those applying from abroad can use an Application Submission ID for advance processing.
  • Approvals are quicker, paperwork is reduced, and coordination with trekking agencies is improved.

This system simplifies permit management and ensures safer trekking for solo travelers.

Why This Policy Matters

The new rules reflect Nepal’s effort to balance independent adventure with safety. They also support sustainable tourism and provide local employment for guides and support staff. After years of restrictions, Nepal has now become more accessible for independent, experience-driven travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path Himalayan adventures.
