Trip Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is located in the far eastern part of Nepal and is home to the world’s third-highest mountain. The trail begins along the Tamor River, passes by the Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La, and is bordered to the east by the Teesta River. Situated on the eastern Himalayan border with the Indian state of Sikkim, Kanchenjunga is also known as Kumbhkaran Langur. Its name comes from the Tibetan word “Kanchen Dzonga,” which means “the Five Treasures of the Great Snows”-Kanchenjunga Peak, Kanchenjunga West, Kanchenjunga South, and Kambachen.

Each of these five treasures is said to represent the gods with gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books. The Kanchenjunga trekking area is a restricted zone, and only registered travelers are allowed to explore its remote and pristine landscapes. A journey to Kanchenjunga offers a unique blend of the rich cultural heritage of eastern Nepal and its breathtaking natural beauty. If you’re seeking a quiet, off-the-beaten-path adventure surrounded by diverse landscapes, Kanchenjunga is an ideal choice. In addition to its allure for adventure seekers, the area is famous for its traditional orthodox tea and rich biodiversity, including the cultivation of cardamom and other medicinal herbs.

You can buy or rent equipment in Kathmandu. Ama Adventure can also provide sleeping bags or down jackets for USD 35 each upon request.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
In Kathmandu, you’ll stay in four-star hotels. During the trek, accommodation is in basic guesthouses with twin-sharing rooms and shared bathrooms. Private rooms can be arranged in Kathmandu for an additional cost of USD 35 per night.
What about meals?
Guesthouses serve simple meals like dal bhat, noodles, momos, and some Western-style options. The teahouses also offer vegetarian meals, which we recommend for health reasons.
Will I have access to clean drinking water?
We purify water with Katadyn filters and water purification tablets. Boiled water can be purchased in teahouses for USD 2-5 per liter.
Will I be able to charge electronics?
Yes, charging is available at teahouses for USD 1–5 per charge. Bring a two-pin (C) or three-pin (D) adapter.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Cancellations must be made 20 days prior for a partial refund (minus a 30% fee). No refunds are given for trips canceled within 20 days. Ama Adventure can help with insurance claims.
Is tipping expected?
Tipping is a customary way to thank staff. We recommend allocating roughly 10% of the total trip cost for guides and porters.
Will I be trekking with others?
You may be placed in a group unless you book a private trip. Group details can be shared upon request.
What about extending my trip?
We can help adjust your itinerary or add days if requested, although changes must be made in agreement with your guide and group.
What about mobile connectivity?
Mobile service is available until Ghunsa. After that, service is unreliable, and we rely on satellite phones for emergencies. We can help you obtain a local SIM card upon arrival.
