Today marks the beginning of your trans-Himalayan cycling adventure. Leaving Lhasa behind, you ride past Drepung Monastery and out into the wide Lhasa Valley. The paved Freedom Highway winds alongside the Yarlung Tsangpo River, offering an easy warm-up as you pedal through scattered villages and open plateau. By late afternoon, you’ll reach the quiet settlement of Chusul, where your guesthouse awaits.

A challenging but spectacular day unfolds as you tackle the 25 km ascent to Kamba La Pass. The switchbacks are steep and long, but the summit view of Yamdrok Lake’s turquoise waters is unforgettable. You’ll ride steadily uphill today toward the mighty Karol La Pass. At over 5,000 meters, this is your first high-altitude challenge. The descent is long and exhilarating, dropping you into the agricultural heartland of the Yang Chug Valley. Explore Gyantse’s historic landmarks, including the ancient Dzong fortress and the remarkably tiered stupa of Kumbum.

Today you face the highest paved pass on the Friendship Highway-Gyatso La. The ascent is demanding but delivers sweeping Himalayan views, including your first distant glimpse of Everest. After the summit, descend to Shegar for the night.

Leaving the main road, you now head off-road into remote terrain. Climb to Pang La Pass, which offers one of the most stunning views of the Everest range. A winding descent takes you into the Rongbuk Valley to the peaceful hamlet of Tashi Dzong.

Cycle along a rough jeep trail with Everest’s mighty North Face in full view. Visit the sacred Rongbuk Monastery, then continue to your overnight camp near Everest Base Camp. Spend the afternoon soaking in views that words can barely describe.

This is one of the toughest days on the trip. Cross two high passes through steep switchbacks and wild mountain scenery. After 40 km uphill and 30 km descent, reach the foot of Gontala Pass in Gyirong County. Camp for the night in the upper Himalayan wilderness.

Difficulty Level
The Lhasa to Kathmandu biking tour demands excellent physical fitness. Riders will traverse extreme altitudes above 5,000 meters, steep climbs, and technical descents. Prior mountain biking experience and pre-trip conditioning are highly recommended. You’ll need strong cardiovascular endurance and comfort riding in remote, high-elevation terrain.
Meals
Throughout our trek, you’ll savor authentic Nepalese dishes alongside international cuisines such as Tibetan, Continental, Italian, and Indian. Breakfast and dinner will be served at the tea houses or lodge menus where we stay overnight, while lunches will be provided en route to our next destination. During the trek, all meals are included. In Kathmandu, breakfast is provided, and farewell dinner will be arranged for our guests.
Lodging
We’ll be accommodated at Hotel Manaslu in Kathmandu, Kyichu Hotel in Lhasa, Gesar Hotel in Shigatse, Rongbuk Monastery Guest House in Rongbuk, and the best available guesthouses in other remote towns. All accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis. A single supplement is available upon request and costs USD 880 in Lhasa and USD 100 in Kathmandu. Accommodations are based on twin sharing. While we aim for rooms with attached washrooms, please note that some tea houses may only have shared washing and toilet facilities. Single rooms are readily available in Kathmandu, and lower-elevation trekking areas, but availability might be limited at higher elevations.
Weather Information
Temperatures in Tibet can vary dramatically. Days are often sunny and range from 10°C to 21°C, depending on altitude. Nights can plunge below -6°C, especially near high passes and campsites. The weather is driest and most stable from April to June and September to October, making these ideal months for the tour.
