A wide variety of landscapes from low lands, tropical forests to the high Himalayas gives an ample choice for the filmmakers to capture it in their lense. The cultural heritages, ancient monuments, festivals and diversed group of people gives another magical aura to make the country more vibrant. The country offers a colorful blend of natural beauty with the rich culture making it unique of it’s kind.

Filming in Nepal

 

1. Application

Nepal is gradually becoming a centre of attention for filming and related activities. It has increasingly been attracting filmmakers from all around the globe. The primary reasons behind the high number of film crews visiting the country are some unique geographical and socio-cultural settings.

As a coordinator, it is advisable to hire a local film production company. To film in Nepal you will need a shooting permit granted by the Ministry of Information and Communications. Furthermore you will have to make sure that all the equipment and material brought into Nepal complies with legislative requirements. Visa and the socio-cultural context must also be taken into consideration when planning to film in Nepal.

Ama Adventure's aim is to help you obtaining all the necessary permission and the equipment to enable your crew to film here, working in conjunction with the local authorities, police, residents and professionals in the film industry.

2. Visa

Foreigners entering Nepal for filming purposes or as tourists should apply for a Tourist Visa. A Tourist Visa is granted for a maximum period of 150 days in a visa year (Visa year means January to December). To obtain any kind of visas please contact the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate in your country or apply for a 'Visa on Arrival' at Nepal's immigration entry points. All powers to grant or not to grant a visa to any foreigner are vested in Nepal Government.

Important Notice:

1. People of to below mentioned countries do not get Visa on Arrival at the immigration entry point of Nepal: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.

2. All foreign visitors are requested to be mindful of the date of Nepalese visa and their passport number to avoid problems. As such, you are requested to apply for a visa extension. If you wish so, apply within the valid period of Nepalese visa.

3. You are requested to get the arrival/departure stamps on your passport at the entry /exit points to avoid legal complications.

4. Living in Nepal without passport or a valid visa is a punishable offence.

5. Change of purpose of stay without permission is not allowed. Employment or voluntary services while on a tourist visa are strictly prohibited and it is a punishable offence.

3. Customs

Filmmakers bringing equipments and materials into Nepal on a 'Temporary Basis' must inform the Film Development Board (FDB) with the help of a local coordinator. This should be effectuated after receiving a shooting permit from the Ministry of Information and Communications. FDB will issue a letter of recommendation to the Custom Office. There is no custom duty for this. The Nepalese Customs Administration collects Customs duties, Value Added Tax, Excise and other taxes at the country's border points. Before attempting to import restricted goods, ensure that you will comply with legislative requirements.

4. Do and Don't

 

With its diverse ethnic groups and traditional beliefs, Nepal has numerous cultural practices that may appear unusual to a person on his/her first visit to the country. However, to enjoy your stay in Nepal it is important to take into consideration the different cultural aspects of the country. Here's a list of things, which may be helpful to you.

1. The form of greetings in Nepal is "Namaste" or "Namaskar" to superiors, and it is performed by joining palms together.

2.  Before entering a Nepalese home, temple, and stupa remember to remove your shoes

3. Be careful not to use your spoon, fork or a hand used for your eating to touch other people's food, plate, cooking utensil or the serving dish. Do not eat from other people's plate and do not drink from other people's bottle or glass. It is considered impure by the Nepalese people.

4.  Never touch anything with your feet. This it is considered as an offence.

5.  While travelling dress appropriately. Women should especially avoid dressing in skimpy outfits.

6. Do not lick your fingers after eating any finger food (or any food for that matter). Also, blowing your nose loudly in public can be considered outrageously gross by some.

7. Seek permission first before entering a Hindu temple. Many Hindu temples do not allow westerners or non-Hindu to enter. Leather articles are prohibited.

8. Walking around temples or stupas is traditionally done clockwise.

9. Take photographs only after receiving permission from the person being photographed.

10. Public displays of affection between man and woman are frowned upon. Do not do something that is totally alien to our culture and environment.

11. Remember, many times, when a person shakes his head from left to right, he may mean "YES"

12. Develop a genuine interest to meet and talk to Nepalese people and respect their local customs.

13. Expressing sexual feelings in public is unacceptable in the Nepali culture.

14. When shooting in Nepal, it is advisable that you do not have anything in the script offending Nepal’s national institutions, religion, customs and culture
